The Soil remembers
Art – Science – History of Place
Why is this soil here? Why isn’t it over there? What is buried beneath my feet? Do the soil microbes know that I am here? Do they care?
The “language of the soil microbes” from this site can be seen on the attached cotton cloth. Our project team buried cotton canvas cloths in several locations at Fort Worden in March, 2012, and retrieved them five weeks later. The soil was analyzed for nutrient content, and the signs were painted using the soil as pigment from near the location of each sign.
